Inaugural African art exhibition and auction opens in Belgium

The inaugural Art African Excellensitys exhibition is set to spotlight approximately 160 pieces by over 40 African artists.

The event, held at the Val Saint-Lambert Abbey in Seraing on 10th and 11th May, will feature an African art auction on Saturday.

It has been organised in collaboration with the Jeunes Artistes Africains (JAA) association, known for frequently finding new talents across Africa.

“We will showcase contemporary and realistic art, not ethnic, it will be eclectic. There are for example sculptures crafted from bamboo,” said founder Olga Matumona Kembi.

The exhibition and auction will host an artistic variety, embracing artworks in painting, sculpting, and photography among others. It aims to represent the artistic scene of a continent foreign to many.

The guest of honour for this inaugural edition is internationally acclaimed photographer, Angèle Etoundi Essamba. Engaged in an exploration of black female identity, Essamba’s work has previously been featured in esteemed global institutions and biennials from Venice to Johannesburg, Havana, Dak’Art, Bamako and others.

Attendees will have the opportunity to admire Essamba’s work alongside other renowned artists like David Norocos, an Ivorian visual artist, and the Congolese sketch artist and portraitist, Lusasi Makuba Armando Diego-Ardos.

The artwork estimates range from 300 to 5,000 euros.
