A parked van fell through a road in the Brussels municipality of Saint-Gilles as its pavement collapsed on Thursday evening, the Brussels fire service announced.
At around 18:30 on Thursday, a pavement collapsed in the Rue de Bordeaux, in Saint-Gilles. The Brussels fire brigade, together with the police, Vivaqua and Sibelga, were called to intervene. No one was injured.
"A parked car was halfway down the gaping hole. The cause of the incident was probably a water leak. The car was pulled out of the hole by our crane. Drinking water was cut off in the street," said Brussels fire service spokesperson Walter Derieuw.
Temporary water points were installed by Vivaqua, which will now get down to repairing the road. Gas operator Sibelga has checked the gas and electricity pipes, but no damage was reported.
The road was currently closed to traffic but has since been opened again.
