Brussels’ Grand Place, along with many of the EU’s other iconic landmarks, will light up in European colours this Thursday to mark Europe Day, the European Parliament announced on Tuesday.
Over 60 cities across Europe will display messages encouraging citizens to vote, featuring the election campaign slogan: "Use your voice. Or others will decide for you.”
Several notable sites, including Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, Rome’s Colosseum, Dublin’s Samuel Beckett Bridge and National Parliament buildings, Vilnius’ Town Hall, La Valletta’s Fort Saint Angelo, Bratislava’s Presidential Palace, Madrid’s Cibeles Fountain and Bucharest’s National Parliament, will also be adorned with vibrant European colours for the occasion.
Along with these illuminations, the European Parliament and national and local authorities are working together to send a unifying message to the 440 million European citizens, highlighting the importance of the forthcoming European elections for everyone’s future. The European Parliament emphasised that Europe Day is not only a day of remembrance but also a day to reflect on our shared future.
May 9 marks the anniversary of the historical declaration made by Robert Schuman, proposing a new form of political cooperation in Europe that would make war between European nations unthinkable. This proposal is considered the founding act of what is today’s European Union.
