The number of sightings of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) – formerly known as Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) – in Belgium has reached over 350 in the last two years, according to data by Enigma Labs, which calls itself the largest UFO sightings alert network worldwide.
The term UAP is currently used loosely to mean any perceived anomalous object or phenomenon that is not immediately explainable. It is generally used to describe aerial phenomena. The terminology was changed to UAP as many felt UFO came to be synonymous with alien spacecraft or "flying saucers."
Since 2022, Enigma data shows 349 UFO sightings from Belgium and thousands across Europe. Witnesses describe seeing "bizarre objects at unbelievable speed" that "change shapes many times." Some of these witnesses even claim they see these objects "multiple times a week."
Citizens can view reports grouped by location and also report UAP sightings themselves. So far, five sightings from Belgium have been submitted to Enigma. Inclusive of third party sources, a total of 356 sightings from Belgium are published on the platform.

Footage on Enigma's website shows a UAP sighting in the municipality of Hoeselt in the Limburg province uploaded close to midnight on 22 October 2023. In the app, more reports of sightings can be found. 42 of the reported sightings came from the Brussels-Capital Region.
In 2023, the Belgian UFO hotline (Belgische ufo-meldpunt) received 223 reports about possible alien sightings on its website – a slight increase from 217 in 2022. Since the start of 2024, the website has registered 46 reports so far.
"Despite the hotline's efforts to use an IFO (Identified Flying Object) database to better arm witnesses to self-identify the UFOs they observe, we continue to receive reports that are often very easy to explain. Stars, planets, aircraft and balloons remain the most common incentives for reporting a UFO," a statement on the website reads.
