A suspect has been arrested in connection to the shooting that took place in Anderlecht last year which saw a man take 17 bullets from Kalashnikovs.
The 31-year-old victim was shot dead on 14 September on Rue Wayez in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht. His murder was compared by locals to scenes only seen in movies: he had received 17 gun wounds and a total of 19 shell casings were found near the car.
An investigating judge was requisitioned by the Brussels public prosecutor for the charge of murder. No new information was released for months but it has now been confirmed that a person was arrested.
"As part of the investigation, we can say that a suspect was arrested and charged with complicity in the murder," the public prosecutor's spokesperson Yasmina Vanoverschelde stated. "He is suspected of having transported the perpetrator(s) after the shooting," she added. The suspect reportedly spent some time in prison in connection with these offences and is currently under electronic surveillance.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues. The public prosecutor did not provide further information about the identity of the gunman or the gunmen.
At the time, various media reported that a car with four occupants trapped the victim's car. One or more assailants got out and fired their Kalashnikovs at the victim. Police later found their burnt-out getaway car in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean.
The 14 September shooting was the third to take place in Anderlecht in a matter of days. In the same week, at least eight shots were fired in the infamous Peterbos neighbourhood, while shots were also fired in rue Dover, near rue Wayez.
