Two people were shot on Sunday night near a café in the centre of Brussels. One of the victims was seriously injured and died later in the day on Monday. The two perpetrators reportedly fled the scene.
Two people riding a scooter opened fire towards a café on Avenue de Stalingrad in the centre of Brussels on Sunday evening, shortly after 23:00, the city of Brussels/Ixelles police zone confirmed to Belga News Agency.
"Police were alerted at 23:12 by the emergency services to shots fired on the Avenue de Stalingrad," a police spokesperson said. "When they arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds. One of them was unconscious and seriously injured." The seriously injured victim, who was aged 28, died on Monday as a result of his injuries, the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed.
Both victims were taken to hospital. The police set up a security perimeter on Avenue de Stalingrad towards the Brussels-Midi side. The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office was informed of the incident, after which the lab and a ballistics expert were dispatched to the scene.
The two people on the scooter then fled after firing their shots, a spokesperson for the police zone explained. The police have not yet caught the two perpetrators.
The exact circumstances of the shooting are still unclear and are part of the ongoing investigation, which was handed over to the DR6, the homicide section of the Federal Judicial Police, after one of the victims died.
While the location of the shooting has not been revealed, Bruzz reported on Monday morning that the façade of a café on the corner of Avenue de Stalingrad and Rue de la Fontaine was damaged.
