Belgium is set to ban the export of highly polluting fuels which, though banned domestically, continue to be sold in Africa, according to an announcement from Federal Environment Minister Zakia Khattabi.
This move involves cooperation between Khattabi, Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten, and Public Health Minister, Frank Vandenbroucke.
Targeted fuels contain high levels of sulphur or benzene, both of which have proven detrimental health and environmental impacts. An example of this is the "dirty diesel" exported from the Antwerp port headed for West Africa, as highlighted by Vooruit MP Kris Verduyckt.
According to the new regulation, exported fuels must comply with the same quality standards that apply to fuels for the European market, Khattabi's office clarified in an official statement.
The ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam had previously been major hubs for exporting highly polluting fuel. However, the Netherlands tackled this issue last year, effectively placing Antwerp at the forefront.
