The Socialist Party (PS) will not enter any governing coalitions in Belgium but instead will be in the opposition, at both the federal and regional levels, the party leader Paul Magnette announced on Monday.
"We have arrived at the logical conclusion that it makes sense for us to join the opposition. The tide has shifted to the right and the winners are the MR and the Engagés," Magnette said.
The decision is understandable in Wallonia, where the liberals and centrists already have sufficient seats to form a majority. However it came as a surprise in Brussels, where the socialists are generally seen as a vital partner to achieve a majority.
"There is a formula where the PS can be sidelined. As the leading political group in Brussels, it is up to MR to make a coalition. As it stands, we opt to go into opposition." Magnette described a tidal shift to the right which has completely changed Belgium's French-speaking political landscape.
"I recognise that," Magnette added. "There is a general European trend. The entirety of Europe has moved to the right, Belgium has not been an exception."
On whether he would continue as president of the French-speaking socialists, Magnette said: "[The party] unanimously asked me to carry on and promptly start campaigning for the local elections."
