Terrorist attacks slightly more likely in the Netherlands than last year

The threat of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands has increased slightly over the past six months, according to a biannual review conducted by the national coordinator for security and counterterrorism, NCTV.

A key risk comes from jihadist networks operating within Europe and linked to the Islamic State (IS), notes the NCTV. Furthermore, the increasing number of individuals being radicalised online, some of them very young, is a rising concern. Some of these have already carried out attacks, leading to numerous arrests across Europe.

The Netherlands also faces threats from the far-right, predominantly online. This terror threat is deemed “more unpredictable and harder to detect” than a few years ago, due to increasingly fragmented online groups working more closely together.

The NCTV indicates a “limited” threat from the far-left. However, it has observed a recent hardening of their online activities. For now, this chiefly involves intimidation and the leaking of personal data online (doxing).
