The new leader of the Flemish liberal party Open VLD is set to be announced in August, following approval of an election timetable by the resigning party management.

Tom Ongena, who decided to step down as the head of the Flemish liberals after a significant election defeat on 9 June, triggered a collective resignation within the party leadership.

Voting should begin around mid-August, with a clear winner potentially emerging in the first round – this is not guaranteed, however, as the new president requires an absolute majority of votes. If a second round is needed, it is scheduled to take place the following week.

Nonetheless, the plan drawn up on Monday is subject to approval by the party council, consisting of numerous local representatives. They are likely to keep in mind the impact this presidential election could have on the local elections campaign in October.

Given the council's consensus on the timetable, applications will be open until 8 July. Elections will also be held at the same time to replenish the party leadership team.
