The monumental elevator of Brussels' Atomium is now offering an extraordinary visual spectacle to visitors, as the Visual System artist collective put in place its 'Look Up' installation.
Travelling the 100 meters of the Atomium elevator will become a "visual and auditory experience" as part of the collective's 'Look Up' project. "This forms a sculpture which is as monumental as it is minimalist and highlights the exceptional character of the structure," a press release from the Atomium reads.
Visitors to the Brussels monument can not only enjoy the visual spectacle, but also the complementary music composed by Thomas Vaquié, who is a member of the Visual System collective.
The installation aims to offer a modern touch to the monument, which has been the icon of the Belgian capital for more than 60 years. Built for the 1958 Universal Exhibition in Brussels, the Atomium was equipped with the fastest elevator in the world which could transport 500 people per hour, at a speed of five meters per second.
This artistic project is part of the Atomium's aim of adding digital art to its programme by hosting temporary and permanent exhibitions and installations. In this regard, visitors can enjoy another sound and light show from the Visual System collective all year round, which enhances the central dome of the building.
