Belgium’s first crypto stamp will go on sale this October, the postal operator, Bpost, announced in a statement on Friday.
The postage stamp will have a dual use. The physical stamp works like any regular one and is valid for international mail up to 100g. However, as a crypto stamp, it also has a digital aspect to it. Every stamp has a "digital twin" in the form of a unique digital image - known as a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) image - which is stored online and can be virtually collected or exchanged.
"We are offering our customers a new way of collecting and exchanging postage stamps that is both secure and innovative," says the CEO of Bpostgroup, Chris Peeters.
The exact design of the stamp will only be revealed in September, along with the information regarding the terms of purchase and the features of the "digital twin". The stamp will be available for online purchase from 21 October via Bpost’s eShop.
Belgium's crypto postage stamp was created through a collaboration with Austria Post, Dutch postal service PostNL, and Luxembourg Post.
According to Bpost, the first crypto stamps were launched in 2019 by the Austrian postal company. Three years later, the company collaborated with PostNL on the first joint crypto stamp.
