The libraries of Brussels are joining forces to bring literature to local parks for the 'Reading in the Parks' initiative.
From 8 July to 23 August, every weekday, storytellers will engage with children in the green spaces across the city’s 19 municipalities, according to an announcement from the City of Brussels.
During the summer break, animators, armed with their daily book selections, will offer free book readings aimed at children aged 3 to 10.
"The aim is to pique children’s curiosity and reconnect them with the joy of reading," explains Faouzia Hariche, the City Councillor for Public Education and Youth.
"By engaging with the local community, our teams hope to reach individuals who aren’t typically inclined to read. Reading is a method of enriching vocabulary. It’s a potent tool for personal growth and social mobility."
At each municipality, each location of the initiative is sponsored by a public library. If bad weather strikes, alternatives will be offered. The associated library can be contacted for more information.
This initiative is organised by The Centre for Youth Literature of the City of Brussels, working in association with the network of libraries in the Brussels-Capital Region. The complete schedule for the events is available on the Brussels' libraries website.
