Copenhagen’s official tourism organisation, Wonderful Copenhagen, has launched a new initiative encouraging tourists to act more sustainably, it announced in a statement on Monday.

The CopenPay initiative allows environmentally friendly actions to be converted into a currency-like reward system, granting access to a variety of cultural experiences.

CopenPay is now rewarding behaviours such as cycling, participating in clean-up efforts, and volunteering at urban farms by offering free access to a range of activities. These include guided tours of museums, kayak rentals, and vegetarian lunches made from local produce.

Wonderful Copenhagen’s ambition is to help tourists to close the gap between their desire to act sustainably and their actual behaviour. A survey by the Kantar Institute, mentioned in the statement, found that 82% of respondents claimed a desire to be sustainable, yet only 22% had adjusted their actions accordingly. It is hoped that CopenPay will encourage travellers to make more conscious ecological choices.

“Copenhagen presents a unique opportunity for tourists take part in environmental action in exchange for cultural experiences," said the city's mayor, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen. "This not only benefits the environment, but also the local community.”

With over 20 attractions this summer, CopenPay aims not only to enhance visitors’ local experience, but also to inspire other destinations.
