Two individuals have received suspended prison sentences and fines for drug trafficking following a police investigation that uncovered nearly 100 kgs of cannabis in a Brussels basement in September 2023, police announced on Tuesday.

On 30 September 2023, two police officers responded to a water damage report at a residential property. They were alerted by an individual experiencing serious water ingress from the flat above.

“To prevent further damage and ceiling collapse, our colleagues attended to the source of the leak,” the local police explained.

That led to the discovery of significant quantities of illegal substances in the flat and in the basement, including 91.476 kgs of cannabis and some hashish. In addition, weighing scales, packaging equipment and gloves were found, leading police to confirm that the drugs were intended for sale.

Police also seized cash, three rounds of ammunition, two vehicles and five mobile phones during their investigation.

The two suspects were arrested, brought before a magistrate, tried and convicted of drug trafficking.
