The European Parliament passed its first resolution of the 2024-2029 legislature on Wednesday, reaffirming the EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine amid Russian aggression and criticising Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s recent visit to Moscow.

With 495 votes for, 137 against, and 47 abstentions, the resolution condemned Orban’s early July visit, seen as a “blatant violation of EU treaties and common foreign policy.”

The nationalist-conservative leader, whose country currently holds the EU Council’s rotating presidency, “cannot claim to represent the Union,” it said.

“This violation should result in repercussions for Hungary,” the MEPs urged,

Following the Hungarian Prime Minister’s self-styled “peace mission,” Russia attacked the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, demonstrating the “ineffectiveness of his alleged peace efforts,” the resolution noted.

The resolution was co-signed by the European People's Party (EPP), Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), Renew Europe, and  Greens-European Free Alliance groups.
