The Belgian government’s €1,000 incentive to encourage employers to hire disabled people is failing, L’Echo reports.

Amidst a continual rise in the number of disabled people in the country, De Croo’s government tried to find various measures to activate them.

One of these measures, introduced on 1 July 2023, was a “back-to-work” bonus of €1,000, targeting those employers recruiting part-time employees who had been ill for at least a year. Meanwhile the employee would maintain their status as being unable to work.

However, according to initial figures collected by L’Echo, the back-to-work bonus has not managed to persuade employers.

After two quarters, 408 bonuses have only been been paid out by Inami, amounting to €408,000 - a tiny fraction of the €8.75 million budget that the government earmarked for the initiative.
