A 17-tonne vehicle parked in the Brussels municipality of Forest caused a small part of the road to collapse, resulting in the closure of a section of the affected street to traffic.

The Brussels Fire Brigade was called to Rue du Zodiaque in Forest on Wednesday morning at around 08:00 to free a 17-tonne aerial work platform – a mechanical device usually used to transport objects to higher stories –  after a part of the road beneath it collapsed. One of its wheels subsequently became stuck.

"With the help of our crane, the vehicle was removed from the pit," the fire brigade's spokesperson Walter Derieuw said.

Officers of the Brussels-Midi police zone, Brussels water utility company Vivaqua and Brussels energy network operator Sibelga also participated in the operation.

"Vivaqua and Sibelga inspected their underground pipes which, fortunately, were not affected by the road collapse."

The incident resulted in traffic being blocked in the Rue du Zodiaque, between the Rue Rodenbach and the Avenue Albert.

What caused the road to collapse beneath the vehicle remains unclear.
