New car registrations down by over 7% in July

Sales of new passenger cars dropped by 7.3% in July 2024 compared to July 2023, the Belgian and Luxembourg Federation of the Automobile and Cycle industry (FEBIAC) reported on Thursday. They recorded 32,151 new registrations.

From January to July 2024, 295,559 new car registrations were noted, marking a 1.2% drop from the same period last year.

For the first time, the market share of new, fully electric car registrations surpassed the symbolic threshold of 25% (25.1%), FEBIAC added.

Sales of light commercial vehicles showed 4,743 new registrations in July this year, falling by 5.4% compared to July 2023. However, heavy commercial vehicles weighing up to 16 tonnes increased by 37%, while those over 16 tonnes plummeted by 15%.

In contrast, the two-wheeled motorised market (which includes motorcycles, scooters, tricycles and light quadricycles) saw positive growth in July. It increased by 7.1% with 2,754 registrations.
