Aside from the fame and sense of accomplishment that comes with winning medals at the Olympic Games, some of the metal disks are also worth a lot. This year, the price rise of gold means the top revered reward is worth a record-breaking €862.57.

Never before have gold medals at the Olympic games been worth more than this year. A gold medal from the Paris Olympics is worth a record-breaking €862.57, according to investment platform Saxo. This value eclipses the €643.46 price tag of gold medals from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and the €497.30 from Rio’s 2016 Olympics.

While a gold medal consists of more than half a kilo of silver and just 6 grams of gold, the rise in the price of precious metals (gold and silver prices rose by an average of 6% a year) means these medals are now worth much more.

"2024 has seen the price of gold at an all-time high, making this year’s Olympic top prize the most valuable it has ever been," Saxo wrote.

A silver medal is worth €436.34 this year, or 84% more than at the previous Tokyo Games. On the other hand, someone winning a bronze medal will also gain emotional value. As these are made of 415.5 grams of copper and 21.85 grams of zinc, they are worth just €3.58.

Apart from the (now more expensive) precious metals they contain, each Olympic medal awarded at the Paris Games is also unique from previous versions, as they each contain 18 grams of the Eiffel Tower.

A hexagonal piece of metal which comes from parts replaced during renovations of the French monument is placed at the heart of each medal.  "This distinctive feature adds historical and cultural value, but negligible monetary value due to the low cost of iron," Saxo wrote.
