A young man was shot and wounded on Sunday night in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht, confirmed by acting mayor Alain Kestemont, following reports in various Belgian media outlets.

The incident occurred near Rue de l’Ecole Moderne and Rue des Goujons, with an ambulance having been quickly deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a man lying on the ground.

It was initially believed the victim had been hospitalised with life-threatening injuries, but an update on Monday morning by the Brussels Public Prosecutor clarified the victim was transferred to the hospital for treatment but his life was not in danger.

"After being informed of the facts, the Deputy Public Prosecutor ordered the first investigative steps, i.e. the interviewing of witnesses, the neighbourhood investigation and the intervention of the Federal Judicial Police laboratory and a ballistics expert," the statement read.

A separate shooting took place over the weekend, with another individual targeted. The suspect in this attack, which took place on Saturday evening on Avenue Stalingrad in Brussels, remains at large.

The Brussels Public Prosecutor has initiated a murder attempt investigation into the incident.
