Belgian cyclist Lotte Kopecky finished fourth in the women's omnium race on Sunday, narrowly missing out on another medal. The Belgian Cats also lost their match for the bronze medal in women's basketball.

Kopecky finished fourth in the women's Olympic omnium on Sunday. She rode a very strong final points race at the national cycling track in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and still came to a total of 116 points, but that proved not good enough for bronze.

American Jennifer Valente, also a two-time world champion in the omnium, extended her Olympic gold medal with 144 points. Silver went to Poland's Daria Pikulik (131pts), while bronze was for New Zealand's Ally Wollaston (125pts)

Best-ever Olympic result

The women's basketball team also failed to secure a medal on the final day of the Olympic Games, after losing the game for the bronze 81-85 to Australia.

For the Belgian Cats, Julie Vanloo was top shooter with 26 points, after scoring four three-pointers. Emma Meesseman finished with 23 points. Top shooter of the game was Australian Ezi Magbegor, with 30 points.

This is the Cats' best result ever at the Olympics; three years ago, they finished seventh in Tokyo in their first participation. At the World Championships, they were fourth and fifth, consecutively in 2018 and 2022. At that World Cup two years ago, they went out in the quarter-finals against Australia.

The best results so far have been at the European Championships, culminating in last year's gold. Before that, there was bronze each time in 2017 and 2021.

In the final, France and the United States face each other Sunday afternoon at 15:30 – the last competition of this year's Olympic Games.
