A Fouga Magister aircraft plunged into the sea during an air show in Lavandou, southern France, on Friday, resulting in the death of the pilot.

The aircraft, a light twin-engine model equipped with an ejector seat, was used by France’s aerial demonstration team, Patrouille de France (PAF), between 1964 and 1980. A spokesperson from the French Air Force clarified that it had been scheduled to participate in a demonstration during the air show.

Following the crash, a rescue operation was immediately initiated to locate the missing pilot, whose lifeless body was later discovered in the water. The deceased pilot was born in 1959.

In light of the accident, the air show was cancelled, Lavandou’s tourism department said.
