A man was fatally shot on Thursday evening in Koekelberg, Brussels, with a suspect now under arrest, according to the Brussels-West police zone.
On Thursday around 22:00, the police were called following reports of gunshots on Sainte-Anne Street in Koekelberg. Intervention services and an anti-firearm team swiftly arrived at the scene, finding a man with gunshot wounds at the entrance of a cafe. Attempts by emergency services to revive him were unsuccessful and he died at the scene.
Police then established a security perimeter and alerted the Brussels prosecutors’ office. This led to the dispatch of a forensic science team to the location.
Several hours after the incident, in another Brussels municipality, police investigators arrested a suspect. Interrogation of the suspect is ongoing as the investigation continues.
Martijn Baes, chief inspector of the Brussels-West police zone, said that upon arrival his officers found an injured man at the entrance of the café – Chez Ova.
HLN reports that the victim was a 33-year-old café-goer who had come to the café several times looking for a fight and had harassed the owner. Sources say that the owner shot the man in a fit of rage. The victim was known to the police, including for drug-related offences.
