One of Brussels' most unique experiences is returning this week, allowing foodies to take a culinary journey through the Belgian capital. This year, the spotlight will be on young up-and-coming chefs.

The 12th edition of the Tram Experience season will begin its journey on Thursday 29 August. In the coming months, trams in which regular commuters will be replaced with fine diners can be spotted riding through the streets of Brussels. For more than ten years, the one-of-a-kind initiative has been combining people's love for food and public transport.

Every gastronomic tram ride departs from and arrives back at Place Poelaert. "This has proven to be a recipe for success," said Visit Brussels spokesperson Jeroen Roppe. "Because last year, no fewer than 8,500 foodies took part in this unique gastronomic experience, which marked a record."

Rising stars

This year, young chefs will be at the wheel, serving up their concoctions to thousands of people between August and February 2025.

"For several years now, a strong new wind has been blowing through gastronomic Brussels," Roppe said. "They ensure that Brussels is on the international map as a draw for foodies looking for a lively restaurant scene with young and promising talent."

Milan La Roche of St Kilda restaurant, one of the newcomers in the 2024 "Bib Gourmand" of the Michelin Guide, will be the first to provide the menu for the Tram Experience until 13 October.

Inspired by his experiences in Costa Rica and Australia – he worked in the St Kilda district in the city of Melbourne, later giving his restaurant the same name – his culinary style is known for its apparent simplicity. Still, he goes for unexpected and tasty combinations, prepared with respect for the seasons and sustainability.

He will be followed by Jordan Joubert of the KLOK restaurant near Brussels' city centre, whose menu that will be offered until the start of December will be announced on 23 September. During the cosiest time of the year, the duo Ugo Federico of Racines restaurant in Ixelles and Alexandru Sapco of restaurant La Bonne Chère in Brussels' Marolles district will provide a surprising menu.

All recipes are prepared on board by caterer Thibault Granville (Taste Great) and his team.
