Vincent Kompany eagerly awaits his first home match as Bayern Munich’s coach.

“Finally, a match at the Allianz Arena,” he said on Friday’s press conference. He expressed a sense of long-standing attachment to the stadium, despite not having directed a single match there yet.

Kompany had previously travelled to Ulm for the Cup and last weekend, Bayern Munich began the Bundesliga season with a close 3-2 win over Wolfsburg.

On Sunday, the former Burnley coach will lead his team from the Bavarian dugout against Freiburg. He shared, “The new players seem eager. We aim to put on a good match for our fans.”

Following a challenging 3-2 victory at Wolfsburg during the Bundesliga’s opening match, Munich’s defence has faced criticism. Despite this, Kompany asserted no reinforcements were planned, choosing to focus on the detailed analysis and improvement of current performances.

The 38-year-old Brussels native expressed satisfaction with his team’s mentality.

“We continued to fight. The mentality was good, we must come up with solutions as a team. I decide the line-up. Decisions can be made for a player, not against a player,” he explained.

In the revamped Champions League, Bayern Munich will face Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Aston Villa, where Belgian players Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana will also compete.

“I eagerly anticipate the matches and the different teams. I aim to win each game, but it’s still unclear how I’ll feel with the new system. Above all, the players’ fitness is crucial,” he concluded.
