Russian independent news outlet, Mediazona, alongside Russian BBC services, report that they have identified more than 66,000 Russian soldiers killed since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The figure has been gathered by examining various sources. These include official briefings, media and social network publications, and observations of graves within cemeteries.

“As of 30th August, we knew the names of 66,471 Russian soldiers who died in the war,” Mediazona stated in a Telegram announcement.

By mid-April, both media outlets reported identifying over 50,000 fallen Russian soldiers in Ukraine since 24 February 2022. They highlight that their count may not be wholly comprehensive.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, estimated a death toll of 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers by the end of February.

Russian military has sparsely publicized their military losses – and when they have it has been widely considered they understate.

The Kremlin defended the lack of communication regarding Russian military losses by invoking the “state secrets law” and “special regime”.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, declined to provide a figure of Russian losses in Ukraine when questioned by international news agencies in early June. He asserted they were “lesser” than Ukrainian losses, with a “one-to-five” ratio.

The New York Times meanwhile, estimated Russian military losses to be at 120,000 dead in August 2023, citing American officials.
