The Archaeological Museum of Namur formally reopens on Tuesday in its new home at the Bateliers Museum Complex, the Archaeological Society of Namur announced on Monday.

Previously situated within the Halle al’Chair, an old communal butcher’s shop in Namur, since 1855, the museum discontinued its operations in December last for the move.

Now located next door to the Decorative Arts Museum at the Bateliers Museum Complex, the Archaeological Museum provides a fitting stage for its treasures, with renovations amounting to approximately €11 million.

The collections, spanning from the prehistoric to the contemporary period, rank among the richest in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

Additionally, the new layout enables the recontextualisation of the history of Wallonia’s capital and its surroundings. Visitors will also be particularly struck by the grand skylight linking the museum to the former Bateliers Chapel.

To mark European Heritage Days in Wallonia on 7 and 8 September, special family activities will be offered at the museum, such as creating chainmail, shield painting, Gallo-Roman cooking, and games.

A Roman legion will even patrol the museum’s corridors for the occasion.
