An explosion inside a Uccle building’s entrance hall caused significant damage, but no injuries.

The Marlow police zone – which serves Uccle, Auderghem and Watermael-Boitsfort – released information that the incident happened overnight.

"Our services were called following an explosion in a building on rue des Carmélites, Uccle," said police spokesperson Laurent Masset.

Teams quickly arrived at the scene including firefighters only to discover that there was no sign of a fire.

Emergency services found an explosive device, likely a large firework, had been detonated at an apartment’s front door. While the explosion did not cause any casualties, the entrance hall doors were torn off their hinges.

About ten residents were moved to safety by police. The Brussels Public Prosecutor’s office has been notified and launched an investigation, deploying federal police lab technicians and an explosives expert to the site.

The local police spokesperson later confirmed that the blast likely resulted from a personal score being settled, rather than any connection to drug-related criminal activity.

"Further investigation should provide more clarity," the spokesperson added. "The evacuated residents have since been able to return to their homes."
