Michelin-starred chef Nick Bril’s insurer has called for a court-appointed expert following a January accident in his Antwerp restaurant’s car park.

Antwerp’s police court will decide on 25 September whether there is a need to appoint such an expert to assess damages and financial reparations.

Bril is accused of running over Joe Claridge, one of his employees, in the car park of his restaurant, The Jane, while under the influence of alcohol after a New Year’s party. Claridge, 37, may have already been on the ground when the accident occurred.

According to several media outlets, Bril allegedly delayed calling emergency services and did not mention running over a person. The seriously injured victim lost both legs.

Bril’s car insurance company had taken him to court in July, even before the end of the investigation, which was concluded on 20 August.

The insurer has already paid €40,000 to Claridge, but compensation could run into millions. The victim is still undergoing rehabilitation in Leuven.
