Since the introduction of a new regulation in West Flanders, 936 motorists caught using mobile phones while driving have had their driver's licences suspended, according to the public prosecutor’s office.
Previously, mobile phone use while driving carried an immediate fine of €174. However, from 1 June, people found using mobile phones or other electronic devices while at the wheel, immediately lose their licences for 15 days.
Over a three-month period, this led to 936 drivers instantly losing their driving privileges. These offenders will also have to appear before the traffic court, with fines and court fees typically totalling around €500.
The West Flanders prosecutor’s office emphasises that mobile phone use behind the wheel remains a major issue, and a key cause of traffic accidents.
“This measure demonstrates that a tougher approach is necessary to enforce a change in mentality and discourage the use of mobile phones while driving,” said Public Prosecutor Filiep Jodts.
“Drivers must understand that they are not only endangering their own lives, but also those of others due to distractions while driving,” Jodts stressed. “The police also see this measure as positive.”
