Brussels announces support for eco-friendly shopkeepers

The City of Brussels has introduced two new grants, worth €400 each, for shopkeepers who opt for environmentally friendly practices.

The grants aim to endorse the use of sustainable cups and ecological solutions for valuable waste.

“The best waste is the waste that isn’t produced, so we need to encourage our retailers to choose the most ecological and responsible path,” said Councillor for Public Cleanliness Zoubida Jellab. “Our support will hopefully sway many shopkeepers and simultaneously save tons of cardboard and plastic waste.”

The first grant incentivises retailers to switch to reusable cups. The second is aimed at encouraging shops to seek ecological solutions for the handling of their valuable waste materials.

“Coffee grounds, citrus peel, compostable waste: most of these waste materials can be given a second life, enabling us to reduce the amount of waste burnt on our territory,” said Jellab. “Furthermore, this measure encourages the growth of local players involved in waste processing.”

With the grants, the City of Brussels says it seeks to drive change in public cleanliness, help combat climate change, and support the environmental transition of Brussels’ shops.
