Antwerp gears up for annual mobility festival

The streets of the Flemish capital will be transformed on Sunday, 22 September, into the venue for Antwerp Shift, an annual mobility festival promoting sustainable transport.

Although the festival no longer features the name ‘Car-Free Antwerp,’ the city centre will remain largely car-free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The restricted area extends roughly between Eilandje, the Leien, and Zuid, including Scheldekaaien.

Various locations in the city centre will showcase sustainable transport options and host sporting activities. Thirty mobility providers will participate in the event.

Attendees can join a 10-kilometre roller parade, take skateboard and BMX classes, navigate a ‘crazy bikes course,’ and explore new city infrastructure on a cycling tour. Residents of the car-free zone can also set up a flea-market stall outside their homes.

“Antwerp Shift is here to introduce everyone, young and old, to all forms and varieties of mobility,” Mobility Councillor Koen Kennis said. “You will find dozens of mobility solutions and a wide range of partners: ready for conversation, ready for you to sample their offerings.”
