US jazz legend Benny Golson dies at the age of 95

US jazz legend and saxophonist Benny Golson passed away on Saturday in his New York home at the age of 95, his agent, Jason Franklin, told the New York Times on Monday.

Golson started playing the saxophone at 14 and enjoyed a nearly 70-year career, performing alongside jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, and John Coltrane. He was renowned as a specialist in the hard-bop sub-genre of jazz.

As a composer, Golson made a significant impact on the jazz world with songs like ‘I Remember Clifford’, ‘Blues March’ and ‘Killer Joe.’

In the 1960s, he also composed music for TV series, including 'M*A*S*H', 'The Partridge Family' and 'Mission: Impossible.'

In 2020, he received a special Grammy Award for his lifetime achievements.
