New direct rail link between Paris and Berlin from December
An ICE Inter City Express train of German railway operator Deutsche Bahn DB drives past the freight station in Hagen, western Germany on March 11, 2024. Germans faced more travel upheaval after train drivers announced on March 10 a new 24-hour stoppage, hot on the heels of a strike announcement by Lufthansa cabin crew. The GDL train drivers' union said the latest strike affecting passenger services would start at 0100 GMT on March 12 and last until 0100 GMT March 13. For cargo services the strike would start a few hours earlier, the union said in a statement, blaming deadlocked talks with rail operator Deutsche Bahn. A new eight-hour direct train link between Paris and Berlin is set to launch on 16 December, German national railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) announced on Tuesday.

“For the first time the two capitals will be connected by a daytime high-speed train,” stated Deutsche Bahn.

The new service will be offered by DB in collaboration with its French counterpart, SNCF. The two rail companies have been jointly operating high-speed trains since 2007, linking Paris with the German cities of Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich.

The connection between the two capital cities will take eight hours, leaving Paris Gare de l‘Est at 09:55 to arrive in Berlin at 18:03. In the other direction, trains will leave Berlin Hbf at 11:54 and get into Paris at 19:55.

Tickets go on sale from 16 October starting at €59 for 2nd class and €69 for first class.

A daily service has been available between Frankfurt and Marseille since 2012, and a connection between Frankfurt and Bordeaux was launched in 2023.

Currently, an Austrian railway (ÖBB) night train connects the two cities since the end of 2023.
