Tata Steel, the Indian steel giant, is shutting down its last blast furnace in the United Kingdom on Monday.

The closure of the furnace in Port Talbot, South Wales, will result in up to 2,800 job losses.

Port Talbot houses the largest steel plant in the country.

Tata Steel had already announced plans to close its last blast furnaces in Britain by the end of the year.

A new, more modern furnace is planned, but it will require fewer staff.

Tata Steel currently employs around 8,000 people in the U.K.
