Philippe Lanners, known as Bouli Lanners, was among four persons awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa on Monday by the University of Namur (UNamur).

The actor, screenwriter, director, and filmmaker from Liège received his distinction from UNamur’s rector, Annick Castiaux.

Lanners was honoured particularly for his social commitment to various societal issues such as the environment, agriculture, health, and social security.

'My lack of a degree has often made me feel illegitimate'

The theme of this year's awards was 'Honour to the Heralds,' celebrating individuals who, through their art, profession or vocation, amplify the voices of those who are often unheard, much like the messengers of the Middle Ages.

“I am very honoured but also very surprised to receive this distinction, especially considering my limited and chaotic academic background,” Lanners remarked during his acceptance speech. “My lack of a degree has often made me feel illegitimate, a feeling that has accompanied me throughout my life.

"It took me time to publicly express matters I hold dear, be it politically, ecologically, or socially," he added "Fortunately, my professional journey eventually made me a public figure, allowing me gradually to speak out.”

Heralds of Argentinian Burundian, and Lebanese origin also honoured

“Today, I have the privilege of being heard and occasionally becoming the spokesperson for those who do not have this chance. I thank you for this honour, which will help reduce the sense of illegitimacy I still carry. It will allow me to project my voice even further and louder,” he concluded.

Three other individuals were awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. The first was comic book illustrator and artist Zeina Abirached, who grew up during the Lebanese Civil War and conveys this history in her works.

UNamur also honoured Argentine priest Pedro Opeka, who has dedicated his life to improving the conditions of marginalised communities in Madagascar.

Finally, Burundian journalist Bob Rugurika was recognised for his advocacy for press freedom and human rights in his country.
