The biggest and oldest fair in Belgium returns to enchant the people of Liège from Saturday.
For five weeks, until 11 November, the 166 fairground attractions will take over the Boulevard d'Avroy in the heart of the Cité Ardente.
The Foire d'Octobre de Liège will be officially inaugurated on Saturday 5 October at 15:00, with a traditional procession featuring Tchantchès and Nanesse, characters from Liège folklore.
Until November 11, a million people are expected to come and enjoy the thrills offered by 166 attractions, set out along a two-kilometre route, as well as sampling the famous lacquemant waffles, which originate from the region and are typically eaten at the October fair.
The people of Liège will get a chance to taste this local culinary delight, sometimes also spelt lacquement, lacment or lackeman. These fine wheat wafers, filled with sugar and drizzled with orange blossom syrup, are a real symbol of this autumn fair.
The Fair opens at 15:30 except at weekends, on Wednesdays and on public holidays, when the opening time will be brought forward to 14:00. The catering trade will be open from 11.30.
Two reduced-price days will be held on 29 October and 11 November.
To get to the fair, the organisers recommend taking the bus or train. The Guillemins station is just a stone's throw from the festivities.
