The number of new electric cars registered in the first nine months of 2024 has already surpassed the total for the entire year of 2023 in Belgium, the industry organisation Traxio reported on Monday.
A total of 96,233 new vehicles were registered this year, compared to 93,180 in 2023. Additionally, 16,004 used vehicles were registered, up from 12,594 last year.
The Belgian market for electric car registrations is thriving compared to the European market, which has been in decline for some time, according to Traxio.
Recent figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association show a 43.9% drop in the electric car segment in August within the European Union, falling to 92,627 units. This was driven by declining sales in Germany (down 68.8%) and France (down 33.1%).
In Belgium, nearly 90% of new vehicles are registered by businesses and leasing companies. The second-hand market shows a 50-50 split between private individuals and businesses.
People in Flanders have shown increasing interest in electric cars, spurred by the introduction of a new incentive. According to Traxio, 81.5% of new electric cars and 75.1% of used vehicles registered by private individuals were recorded in the northern part of the country.
