The tail end of Hurricane Kirk is expected to bring heavy rain to Europe, including Belgium. Code yellow and the more serious code orange warnings have been issued in several provinces in the country.

The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) expects considerable precipitation in several parts of the country between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning due to Kirk, which is expected to be an ex-hurricane by the time it reaches Europe’s shores.

"Today, depression Kirk moves from the Bay of Biscay over France to the south of our country," the RMI wrote on its website. "An elongated and very active rain zone attached to it will bring a lot of rain over the south-eastern part of our country. We expect considerable precipitation in the southeastern half of the country, mainly in the form of persistent rain."

In the provinces of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg, code orange is in force. In the provinces of Namur and Liège, 50 to 80 l/m2 or even slightly more rain could fall in several places in 24 hours. In the province of Luxembourg, locally 100 mm or slightly more may fall.

"It is not excluded that code red may be declared in Luxembourg later in the day, taking into account the impact forecast by regional and provincial authorities," the RMI warned. Code red is the most severe weather warning that can be issued, and states that people are advised to take action and strictly follow advice from authorities.

In Brussels, as well as the provinces of Hainaut, Flemish and Walloon Brabant and Limburg, the RMI expects 25 to 50 l/m2 of rain in 24 hours, triggering a code yellow for rain. In the north and northeast (the coast, West Flanders, East Flanders and Antwerp), no warnings have been issued as less rain is expected here.

Overall, Wednesday will see rain in much of the country. Maximum temperatures range from 12 to 16°C.
