A spontaneous strike by bus drivers of the Flemish public transport company De Lijn has severely disrupted bus services in Brussels and the Flemish Brabant region, including Halle, Ninove, Asse, Dendermonde, Vilvoorde, and Grimbergen, on Thursday morning.
Almost no buses are running in these areas, De Lijn announced on social media. Union representatives criticised the management’s communication regarding schedule changes set to take effect in January.
Routes must be cancelled due to a shortage of buses and drivers, but the loss of these routes translates into potential job cuts, stated an ACV/CSC representative.
Last week, an initial list of routes to be cut was released, and more were added on Wednesday. The union representative mentioned a “breakdown of trust” between management and employee organisations.
Management regrets this spontaneous action and apologised to travellers. Passengers are advised to check if their journeys are running through the De Lijn app or website.
