The entrance to Brussels' Porte de Namur metro station has been refurbished, announced the Brussels public transport operator (STIB) on Monday.

The makeover was carried out as part of a larger project to redevelop the Square du Bastion, in Ixelles.

The aim was to improve the quality of the public space by making it more inviting and "friendly", STIB explained on social media.

In addition to the new entrance, the project also entails the development of a fountain, more greenery, improved lighting and bicycle racks for the area, explained outgoing Ixelles councillor, Yves Rouyet (Ecolo), on a blog post.

The project was designed by the architectural firm Art & Build.

It was initiated by the private owner of the area and received the support of the municipality of Ixelles and the Brussels Region, according to Rouyet.

The new station will have a total of seven entrances, including a lift (at entrance no.7) for people with reduced mobility.
