The majority of Brussels drivers have shown support for the Good Move mobility plan, according to a study on car ownership and needs in Brussels/Capital Region.

Good Move was a contentious topic in two election campaigns this year and is expected to surface in government negotiations in Brussels.

The interdisciplinary study, commissioned by Brussels Mobility, was presented in the 72nd Guide to Mobility and Traffic Safety in Brussels. It was conducted by Brulocalis, the association of the city and municipalities in Brussels, and was based on responses from some 1,900 drivers.

According to the report, most of the respondents agreed that poor air quality is a public health issue, and that traffic contributes significantly to it. Only 9% and 13% of respondents respectively disagreed with proposals addressing air quality.

Sixty percent of surveyed drivers agreed at least partially with Good Move’s objective of reducing through traffic in residential areas to make them more pleasant and safer, even if it means longer detours for drivers.

Nearly 70% support developing additional bus and tram lines, even at the expense of parking spaces.

And just over half believe the government of Brussels should create more cycle paths, even if this reduces the number of parking spots.
