One person died and four were injured when a passenger train was derailed by a rockslide in northern Norway on Thursday, Norwegian police announced.

The train was hit by a falling rock as it was travelling between the western town of Trondheim and the northern town of Bodø, local police officer Arild Woldmo told the NRK television station.

The accident left one person dead and four injured, NTB news agency reported, quoting another police official, Bent Are Eilertsen.

“There were 55 people on board the train when it derailed,” Eilertsen told the news agency. “All were extracted” from the five-car train.

The locomotive and the first carriage overturned on a slope between the tracks and a road below, according to spectacular images broadcast by Norwegian TV stations.

Three helicopters were dispatched to the scene, according to the Bodø Rescue Centre, while the images showed numerous ambulances and fire engines.

Boulders blocked the front of the convoy, according to witnesses. Operations are complicated by the presence of other boulders overhanging the scene of the accident.

Geologists are expected to be on site to carry out a survey before clearing and lifting the train can begin.

Norway, a country with a rugged geography, is frequently the scene of landslides, especially in spring when the snow melts.
