The Brussels-North police zone held a memorial service on Sunday afternoon for Thomas Monjoie, the police inspector who was killed exactly two years ago today.

A first remembrance event was held on Sunday morning in In Saint-Joost-ten-Node, exclusively for police colleagues. At 19.08, there will be a minute of silence followed by a minute of sirens.

Thomas Monjoie, aged 29, was attacked with a knife while on patrol with a colleague in Schaerbeek on 10 November 2022. Monjoie died from his injuries, and his colleague, Jason P., was critically wounded.

The attacker, 32-year-old Yassine Mahi, was shot and subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder with a terrorist motive. Earlier that day, Mahi had entered a Brussels police station and declared his intent to kill an officer. He was sent to the psychiatric unit at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc but was left unsupervised.

"On 10 November 2022, two police officers were attacked simply because they were police officers," said Olivier Slosse, head of the Brussels North police zone.

"Violence against law enforcement is unacceptable. The safety of our officers is essential and paramount. Without it, our officers cannot serve the community effectively. We will continue to prioritise safety in our district. Every day, we press on in memory of Thomas," Slosse noted.

The three mayors which are covered by the Brussels-North police zone emphasise that two years after the attack, the Northern Quarter remains a priority. "We work day by day to improve safety and community living,” they stated. "Together, we will achieve the best results."
