The Port of Ostend is taking legal action to halt the planned construction of a wind turbine park near Dunkirk.
The proposed site in France overlaps with the western approach route to the port. "Since diplomatic efforts have not yielded the necessary result, we are taking this step," said CEO Dirk Declerck.
The western approach route, known as the Dyckroute, connects the Port of Ostend with southern England and the Atlantic Ocean. It is vital for both industrial shipping and fishing routes.
However, a French consortium plans to build a wind turbine park along this route near Dunkirk. According to the Port of Oostende, this could block the western access to the port.
To prevent the construction and mitigate potential damage, the port is seeking compensation from the developers and a temporary injunction to halt construction.
"The Port of Oostende is using all legal means to defend its interests," said Chairwoman Charlotte Verkeyn. "The port is a vital employment engine and must retain every opportunity to continue fulfilling this role in the future."
