Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo will urgently convene a task force to explore ways to secure an industrial future for the Audi Brussels plant in Forest.

On Tuesday, management of the Brussels car factory announced that there were no longer any candidates interested in taking over the site.

Speaking during a plenary session in the Chamber on Thursday, De Croo reiterated his commitment to finding an industrial future for the site. He plans to invite the Brussels-Capital Region, as well as the Flemish and Walloon Regions, emphasising that it is in everyone’s interest. "We also need to involve Audi’s management," he added.

Socialist benches expressed scepticism. "I hope this task force will be a bit more successful than the previous one," quipped Anja Vanrobaeys (Vooruit). The PS party reminded that they proposed setting up a parliamentary enquiry commission urgently last week.

"We must compel Audi’s management to come and explain. They owe millions of euros and have social responsibilities to their workers. I will put the enquiry commission on the agenda for the next economy commission meeting," promised Khalil Aouasti.

MP Robin Tonniau (PTB), called for reinvesting profits "into our industry." On the other hand, the N-VA argued that a labour market reform is needed to overcome the crisis.
