The Brussels taxi service has launched a new app for people with mobility issues.
Handycab is a phone app which brings together all of those Brussels taxis that are suited for use by people with mobility issues. The app was developed as a cooperation between the official taxi sector and representatives of campaigners for increased mobility and accessibility.
“The principle consists in bringing together most, and ultimately all adapted taxis that operate in the Brussels-Capital Region in the same platform,” the app’s developers said in a press release.
“A conversion and adaptation workshop for technical support of the taxi fleet ensures the continuity of the service,” the team said.
The hope is that a low entry cost will convince operators of accessible taxis to join the platform. Another attraction is that operators are not restricted to Handycab, and can also join with other platforms if they wish.
There are several conditions to entry: a training course in accessibility issues, adherence to a quality charter, and the presence of a kit to ensure the maintenance of distancing and hygiene rules. With those in place, operators can then join the Handycab platform.
“I am very pleased with this new initiative that the taxi sector has set up for our citizens,” said Brussels minister-president Rudi Vervoort (PS), speaking at the beginning of Mobility Week.
“Besides the quality of service and the professionalism of its employees, Handycab is undertaking to serve these customers as a priority. Using the application also saves time, because customers no longer have to contact different taxi services.”
All methods of payment are possible, either in the cab or in the app. A resume of the trip is mailed to the app user, and there is a 24/7 help desk.
“Being able to move around in the city is a basic right for everyone,” said Elke Van den Brandt, Brussels minister for mobility.
“That is why we are working in the Brussels government on all kinds of alternatives, so that everyone can use the means of transport that best suits them. Thanks to Handycab, there will now be an extra, sustainable alternative for people with reduced mobility,” she said.
