Drivers should be vigilant on Wednesday as their speed on Belgian roads will be subject to additional checks for 24 hours, starting on Wednesday morning.
Belgian police announced the 21st edition of its "speed camera marathon" on Wednesday 20 November. From 06:00 in the morning and for 24 hours, more than 100 local police zones and the Federal Police will carry out intensive speed checks. These will take place across Belgium on motorways and secondary roads.
"These additional checks aim to urge drivers to moderate their speed and always stick to the authorised limits," federal police spokesperson An Berger said. "Many drivers still underestimate the dangers posed by excessive speed."
Speeding remains one of the main causes of accidents. It is also one of the biggest killers on Belgian roads, along with drink-driving and using a mobile phone while driving.
The police mainly want to encourage drivers to drive slower; the aim is not to fine a large number of people.
Berger stressed that the results of previous speed camera marathons highlighted the need for such tightened checks, and that work still needs to be done. "In April 2024, 6.02% of drivers checked were driving faster than permitted. In last November's edition, the percentage was 6.19%."
