Low temperatures in the southern half of Belgium may cause icy patches on wet roads, the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium warned on Wednesday morning.
A yellow warning for snow or ice is in effect until 10:00 in the provinces of Hainaut, Liège, Luxembourg and Namur, as temperatures are around or below zero degrees.
Some light local snow showers are also expected on the Ardennes peaks, but any snow cover will remain limited, according to the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI).
Winter showers are expected in the north and east, while the rest of the country will generally remain dry, according to RMI forecasts.
Maximum temperatures will range from 0° in the High Fens to 6° along the coast. Inland, winds will be moderate from the west. Along the coast, winds will be quite strong from the west-northwest, with gusts reaching 50 to 70 km/h.
Brussels prepared to salt roads
In Brussels, authorities have 4,000 tonnes of salt at the ready and are prepared to begin spraying roads and cycle lanes as part of the "winter offensive".
Sarah Vanschoenbeek, head of the Roads Authority within Brussels Mobility said that the authority is modernising its spreading equipment with "more precise machines to measure the salt spread and adapt the spreading width to the road or cycle path concerned".
Brussels Mobility has said that its Roads Authority teams are closely monitoring weather alerts, and can be mobilised 24/7 to carry out preventative salt spreading.
To treat the entire network, Brussels Mobility covers more than 800 km of roads in 3.5 hours, with a complete spreading requiring 85 tonnes of salt.
